Windows XP Service Pack 2 fix for
TMSforms & AutoBullets and any other 16 bit program:
Return to our Help Page

1) If you have downloaded and installed windows xp (service pack 2) and receive the error message below:
To determin if you have Service Pack 2 installed, click Start |  right click My Computer | select Properities. You will see System: and the number of your Service Pack either 1 or 2 will be listed. NOTE: You should not have this problem if you are rinning Service Pack 1. This also works if you have downloaded Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000.

This fix is for error messages similar to these:

  • c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt. the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications.
  • OR
  • c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications.
(NOTE: If you have downloaded and installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP you will not be able to run any of your 16 bit programs like TMSforms. We have a patch that you can download and install to fix this.)

PLEASE FIRST READ THIS Explanation:
For some reason known only to Microsoft, one of the versions of  Service Pack 2 was set up to check for and delete the file autoexec.nt everytime the system comes up (NOTE very few computers were affected by this). This file is in your c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32 folder depending on whether the windows operating system is under a windows or a winnt folder. autoexec.nt is not required to run Windows XP, but it is required to run many other programs particular your older 16 bit programs.  To fix the problem you must have a autoexec.nt file that is read only in the system32 folder.  It is a simple fix, and we are told the Microsoft is working on a fix to the problem.  In the mean time, you can download the ziped file xp-sp2-fix.zip which contains a read only autoexec.nt file from this site and unzip it into either c:\windows\system32\ or c:\winnt\system32\ folder.

Fix 1 (best)

Step 1:
Determin if your windows operating system is loated into c:\windows or c:\winnt

  • Right click Start
  • Select Explore
  • Scroll down the page until you see a folder named windows or winnt

Step 2:
To download and install the read only autoexec.nt file:

  • Click on xp-sp2-fix.zip
  • When asked where to download the file to, download it to any folder on your hard drive or to your Documents and Setings folder that all windows programs have.
  • Open the zip file, highlight the autoexec.nt file (the only file in the zipped file) and select extract
  • Extract the file to your c:\windows\system32\ or c:\winnt\system32\ folder depending on where your windows operatins system is located.
For those of you who do not have a zip/unzip program like WinZip, you can use the program that comes with Windows XP.
  • Download the file to the Documents and Settings folder as described above.
  • Right click Start
  • Select Exlpore
  • Click on Documents and Settings folder
  • Click on xp-sp2-fix.zip to highlight it
  • Right click the file and select Open With then select Compressed (zipped) Folders
  • You now want to right click on the autoexec.nt file and select Edit then Copy from the menu at the top of your screen
  • Scroll down the directory tree on the left hand side of your screen until you find the folder windows or winnt
  • Double click on that folder and all the sub folders will appear below it
  • Find the system32 sub-folder and double click on it so you are inside this folder
  • Click on Edit then select Past which will past the file into the system32 folder

You should be able to install or run our program and any other 16 bit program that you were running prior to downloading and installing Service Pack 2

NOTE: The procedures above may vary depending on what type of program you use to open zipped files or what browser you are using to download our zipped file to your hard drive.

Fix 2
In some cases, we have found that when the user reboots the computer, that windows will delete the autoexec.nt even though it is a read only file.  If this is happening, copy the file as described above and check the properties to ensure it is read only. To determine if the autoexec.nt is read only, using Explore find autoexec.nt and right click on it. Select Properties. Make sure that the Attributes Read only box is checked. If it is read only and still being deleted, the only other option we have found so far that will work is to:

  • Download one of the two self-extracting zipped files listed below to a folder on your hard drive. Then:
  • Right click Start
  • Select Explore and brows to the folder where you saved the self-extracting zipped file to.
  • Right click the file
  • Select Send To
  • Select Desktop (create short cut)
When you boot up your computer you will have to click on the short cut you created then select unzip and the file will be unzipped to your systems32 folder.  You will have to do this every time you boot up and want to run one of your favorite 16 bit programs. I know it is not the best solution, but it is relatively painless.

For those whose computer has Window XP in a folder called windows download xp-sp2-windows-fix.exe

For those whose computer has Window XP in a folder called winnt download xp-sp2-winnt-fix.exe
