About the Book
Judge Roy Bean’s dream of meeting the
beautiful and talented Lily Langtry comes true in these fictitious stories
of the famous western judge. He could now feel that his existence was worthwhile.
Many hardships in the past had presented Judge Roy with seemingly insurmountable
threats, but the crafty old wild west character always managed to
survive although sometimes barely escaping disaster and death.
These stories tell of a number of exciting
adventures that involved Judge Roy, his friend Preacher Isaac and his favorite
mount named Jake the mule. His life there in Langtry, situated on that
small, desolate mesa overlooking the Rio Grande, was more or less
international because in the late 1800's at this location, there seemed
to be no border between the USA and Mexico, especially in this Godforsaken
wilderness west of the Pecos River. Outlaws, bandits, cowboys and goat
herders wandered across the Rio Grande at will. No one thought of this
scarcely populated country as the USA, but only as Texas and there was
no reason why persons should not cross the river back and forth as they
pleased.
The completion of the railroad a few
years before the turn of the century, hardly did anything to civilize the
Langtry area. It sometimes provided excitement sporadically in the form
of train robberies that are mentioned in the stories. At times railroad
employees were killed and at other times robbers were killed and Judge
Roy inevitably became involved in ministering justice according to the
law. Judge Roy was the sturdy, rough and determined old critter who
provided the much needed Law West of the Pecos.
