FALLING INTO FALL

     James Gibson

Autumn approaches—

Life hastens to the harvest,

A corn-silky breeze.

Old friends from afar

an elegant Fall dinner

jets roaming the Earth.

Indian summer

Lingering portent of Fall,

my karma fading.

To understand art

is to experience life,

try drawing a leaf.

A leaf falls to earth

shaken loose by the Fall winds

as a new star appears.

The whippoorwill’s call

filled the Fall with loneliness

when grandmother died.

By the fire he sits,

an old man grayed by the years

feels his last season.

The Christmas Pageant

Brenda Kay Ledford

Since Daddy was the pastor at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, the deacons hoodwinked my sister and me into directing the Christmas play.

Barbara was an art teacher at Hayesville School. She knew how to construct the manger, design the star, and sets. My mama made the costumes for the performers. It fell my lot to keep "law and order" with the rowdy kids. As a teacher, I felt up to the task. It would be a great pageant.

Like popcorn jumping out of the pan, problems exploded on Christmas Eve. The shepherds got into an argument. The lamb had an accident in the church. Mary got frightened and forgot her lines. Joseph stumbled and fell off the stage. The angels lost their clothes hanger wings and the wise men blurted out expletives.

I almost had a panic attack. The congregation laughed and gave a standing ovation. It was like a three-ring circus. Never again would I direct a play.

After the comedy, I zipped toward the backdoor. But Granny Sauerkraut nailed me. She grabbed my hand and squeaked, "Young lady, this is the best Christmas play I’ve ever seen. I laughed so hard I wet my pants. Do that program again next year!"
